Who is Monty?

Monty De La Cruz is one of the lead antagonists in 13 Reasons Why Season 2 played by Timothy Grenaderos. He was despised by the viewers for sexually assaulting Tyler in the show. In Season 3 of 13 Reasons Why, the creator showed a different and vulnerable side of Monty to make the viewers feel and understand the complexities of his character. It lasted for a while, and the grim fate of Monty crawled back to him gradually at the end of Season 3.

In Season 3, fans learned that Monty has long hidden the fact from his friends and family that he is gay. The creators also nicely hid the fact from the viewers about his sexuality. During the season, he was unashamed of his actions and kept threatening Tyler. Monty meets Winston, another high school student at a party, and the closeness develops despite the reluctance of Monty.

Clay and others got to know about Monty assaulting Tyler, and asked him to report Monty to the police which is how he ended up in the prison. He got the title of a child rapist. While he was in prison, Clay and Ani discovered that it was not Monty who killed Bryce but Alex. Thus, to protect Alex they developed a web of lies and framed Monty for it. Ani explained to Winston why they did what they did, and there was no way Monty could have been saved from the law as what he did to Tyler.

Monty was killed because of a tussle between his prison mates in the prison only. In his last scene on the show, his father visited him and rebuked him for the assault on Tyler and for hiding his sexuality from his parents.

Fans and critics think that Monty got a justified ending for his story as he didn’t end up like a bad villain on the show, 13 Reasons Why.

We see that things are not so good for Bryce. He is now on a downward spiral. He drinks too much and after Bryce and Monty’s deaths, he hooks up with a number of people. But with Justin’s death, Zach realises he need to pull up. At Liberty High, he is offered the role as football coach but he declines. Instead he joins college to pursue music.

Devin Druid as Tyler Down

In the starting of Season 4, it was revealed that Tyler is an informant working for the police. But with his secret causes, he is interrogated by his friends for the possession of guns. While at an active-shooter drill at Liberty High, Tyler develops feelings for Monty’s sister Estela. As the series wraps up, they start dating.
