Sony Pictures’ animated take on Spider-Man, which came out as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, was both a commercial hit as well as a fan favorite. Some might even argue that the movie gained more popularity than its live-action counterpart made in collaboration with Marvel. The film, which featured Miles Morales’ Spider-Man as the main character, went on to win the Best Animated Feature at the 2018 Oscars and collected a whopping $375.5 million at the box office worldwide.
We have good news for fans as the studio has announced a prequel to the movie. Read on to find out what we know so far.
Into the Spider-Verse 2 Release Date
Sony had supposedly started working on Into the Spider-Verse 2 just as soon as they released the first movie. The sequel has been officially announced to release on 8 April 2022.
The announcement was made on the movie’s official Twitter page:

Christopher Miller, who is the writer and producer, has also stated that production is not yet underway. Still, once that happens, they will be able to provide more accurate trailer release dates.
Rumors of spin-off movies emerging from the Into the Spider-Verse storyline have also surfaced and are an actual possibility.
Into the Spider-Verse 2 Plot
The first movie ended with the revelation that there might be a way to travel between dimensions without destroying an entire city. This opens up the possibilities for Miles and Gwenn to re-unite, not to mention the infinite number of spider-persons they could team-up. Furthermore, the movie will also develop the relationship between Miles and Gwenn up a notch and might see the duo forming a romantic bond.
 There are rumors that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man may make a cameo in the new movie.Â
A potential time jump was also teased by directing trio Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman.
